Spouse - Newcomers to Canada - Immigrants

You are a resident of Canada and your spouse immigrated to Canada during the tax year.

As a first step, you must indicate in your file that your spouse has joined you. To do this, follow these steps:

1 - On the "Left side menu on the Interview tab", select "Interview setup".

2 - On the screen on the right, check "Immigrant, emigrant, non resident taxpayer, you are a Canadian resident and your spouse immigrated to Canada in the year" and click "Next" at the bottom of the page.

3 - Return to the "Left side menu on the Interview tab" and select "Immigrant, emigrant, non-resident". Then, in the screen on your right, click on the "+" icon next to the line "You are a Canadian resident and your spouse immigrated to Canada in 2019".

4 - On the new page that opens, specify your net income while you were living in Canada with your spouse, as only this amount will be considered to apply the spousal amount on line 30300 of the federal return.

Thereafter, complete your return.

You must add your spouse to the file. To do this, follow these steps:

1 - Under the Interview tab, next to the line "Family head", click on "add a spouse".

2 - This will bring you to the page "Spouse identification" of the Interview tab. Enter the information regarding the spouse. Complete also the pages "CRA Questions" and, if you are a Quebec resident, "Revenu Québec questions" by selecting the appropriate section from the "Left side menu on the Interview tab".

3 - Then return to the "Left side menu on the Interview tab", select "Interview setup"; and in the page on the right, check the box "Immigrant, emigrant, non-resident taxpayer, you are a Canadian resident and your spouse immigrated to Canada in the year" and click on "Next" at the bottom of the page.

4 - Return to the "Left side menu on the Interview tab", select "Immigrant emigrant, non-resident" and in the screen on your right, click on the "+" icon next to the line "You immigrated to Canada in 2019".

5 - On the page "Immigration to Canada", make sure to complete all the fields marked with a red asterisk "*" as they are mandatory.

6 - For the "Canadian sourced income (excluding Part XIII income) earned when you were not a resident of Canada", choose the option which suits you from the drop-down menu and enter the income earned. Enter $0 if there is none.

7 - For "Canadian sources Part XIII income PLUS foreign sourced income earned when you were not a resident of Canada", indicate the country in which the income was earned and indicate the source of income by selecting the appropriate option from the drop-down menu, and enter the earned income. Enter $0 if there is none.

8 - Complete the remaining fields on the page if applicable. If you do not have income from these sources, do not enter a value, leave the fields blank.

The program will generate schedule 5 with the amount for spouse

You can file the spouse's federal return using NETFILE. However, for Quebec residents, the provincial tax return of a newcomer must be sent by mail.
