The taxpayer married a non-resident in the current tax year

You can include your non-resident spouse in your tax file, after you have indicated that you are married in the "Identification" section of the "Left side menu on the Interview tab" and answered "Yes" to the question regarding the change of marital status in 2019. Then, please follow the steps below:

1- On the "Left side menu on the Interview tab" on the left side of the screen, click on "Marital status change" and fill the page accordingly, then click "Next" at the bottom of the page.

2- The "Spouse interview type" page, select "Net income only" for the question, "What information will you provide for your spouse?" Then click "Next" at the bottom of the page.

3- Complete the page "Spouse - basic information" enter the relevant information and for the two questions concerning net income (federal and Quebec), please enter $0,00 for the amount, since this is an individual who did not earn any income in Canada

4- If the spouse does not have a SIN, enter 000-000-000.

Note: fields with a red asterisk are mandatory.

You may file your Federal tax return electronically via NetFile, but you will have to print and mail your Quebec tax return (if applicable) as Quebec requires a valid SIN number.
