Medical expenses - Travel expenses - Federal

If you had to travel at least 40 kilometres (one way) from your home to obtain medical services, you may be able to claim the travel expenses incurred to obtain such medical services.

Also, if you had to travel to a location at least 80 kilometres (one way) from your home for medical care, you could also claim the accommodation costs.

However, we invite you to consult the CRA website by clicking on the link below for more information on the conditions that must be met:

To claim these travel expenses, please follow these steps:

1. On the "Left-side menu on the Interview tab", select "Medical, disability, caregiver".

2. On the new page generated on your right, choose the option "Medical expenses".

3. Enter the information in the first section of the "Medical expenses" page.

4. NOTE: for Quebec residents, travel expenses cannot be claimed if the distance travelled is less than 200 kilometres. In this case, click on the "Maple Leaf" icon to generate a field for Quebec and enter $0,00.

We recommend that you keep all your receipts and keep a record of expenses you incurred.

Note that for Quebec residents, regarding medical expenses for services that are not available in your area, the distance travelled must be more than 200 kilometres and the expenses are claimed on line 378 of the Quebec return.

Therefore, make sure to enter the relevant information on the "Medical expenses" page, in the second section entitled "Expenses for medical services not available within 200 kilometres of your area".

For residents of Quebec, please consult the virtual support agent under "Medical Expenses - Travel expenses - Quebec".

Please consult the following link to the Revenu Québec website for more information regarding expenses for medical services not available in your area:

https://www.revenuquebec.ca/en/citizens/tax-credits/medical-services-not-available-in-your-area/
