This document describes the various steps involved in electronically filing T5013 tax returns and slips through the Internet filing option. Step 1 - Completing the federal T5013 efile setupTo access the federal T5013 efile setup, select EFILE Setup from the Efile menu. DT Max will display the Federal T5013 menu by default. Select the T5013 information you wish to transmit and the method of transmission. You can transmit slips through Internet file transfer (default option), My Business Account, or Represent a Client. – Internet file transfer will require an account number and a web access code. – My Business Account will require an account number. – Represent a Client will require a RepID. We strongly recommend transmitting under our default option. To obtain an account number please call Business Enquiries at 1-800-959-5525 or refer to Business Registration Online A business number must consist of nine numeric characters or fifteen alphanumeric characters. Either format can be entered within the menu Identification Numbers. This menu can be accessed by selecting Preferences, on the DT Max tool bar, and by clicking Identification and Identification Numbers. Your RepID can also be entered within this menu. In order to successfully transmit any T5013 information, you must also properly complete the main or alternate name and address of the tax preparer. If information is missing, DT Max will inform you by displaying an Identification button on the right-hand side. Clicking on this button will allow you quickly access the Tax Preparer Identification menu, where you will be able to complete the required name and address fields. This button will also allow you to access the Identification Numbers menu, if you chose to transmit the T5013 information using your business number or your Rep ID, but neglected to enter it. Once this information is saved, DT Max will once more return you to the Efile menu. You must recalculate your T5013 return if you subsequently modify the information within the Tax Preparer Identification menu. To override your default settings, you may enter the keyword Efile-Federal within a particular client's file. Please note that you are required to electronically file when submitting more than five T5013 slips consisting of a specific slip type (i.e. original, amended, or canceled). You will be liable to a federal penalty if you do not electronically file such slips. Step 2 - Reviewing the eligibility requirementsPrior to transmitting any T5013 information, you must determine whether or not it is eligible for efile. Should a return be ineligible, DT Max will mention it in the Notes and diagnostics page. Step 3 - TransmittingTo transmit T5013 information, click the Efile icon, or select Transmit and receive from the Efile menu. Choose Current client, Federal, and click Continue. Please note that although the CRA will only allow files to be transmitted one at a time, DT Max does have the capability of generating multiple ".XML" files at once. To do so, simply mark the clients in question (using either the spacebar or the [F5] key) in the client list. Once completed, select Transmit and receive from the Efile menu and you will notice that the option Marked clients that are eligible for efile will be automatically selected. Clicking Continue will generate an EFILE transmission log. This log will display the creation of any T5013 files that are ready for Internet filing. Clicking Close will bring you to the T5013 Internet filing menu. This menu allows you to connect to the CRA's Web site where you will have to complete the identification area and attach the file (making sure to include the ".XML" extension). The identification area will require an:
To obtain a web access code for federal purposes, call the e-Services Helpdesk at 1-877-322-7849. Please note that when accessing the CRA's Web page and attaching the file, you will be required to know the location where the file was saved and its name. The file will be saved within a subdirectory of the database. This subdirectory is named E_OUT. The location can also be obtained from the EFILE transmission log or from the T5013 Internet filing menu. The file name will be T5013_xxx.XML where xxx denotes the client number. Any file submitted will be processed in real time, meaning that the acknowledgement will be generated almost instantly. Once successfully transmitted, you should delete the .XML file from your E_OUT folder. This can be accomplished through Windows Explorer. You should also note that the processing status of a transmitted return will not be automatically updated by DT Max. It can be updated manually through the Progress keyword. It is highly recommended, for your own records, that you print and retain any acknowledgment. If you must transmit the same file more than once, for example when transmitting an amended or cancelled T5013 slip after having already transmitted the original T5013 slips, then you must enter the keyword Efile-Federal in order to specify the new T5013 information you wish to transmit. Note: Once a slip type has been successfully transmitted, any additional slips of the same type must be saved and transmitted under a new client file. For example, a new file must be created if you already transmitted two original T5013 slips and must now transmit a third original T5013 slip. This new file would only contain the one additional slip, and it would be transmitted separately. Note: In 2025 the Canada Revenue Agency stopped accepting the electronic transmission of xml files which included both a T5013 return and a T5013 slip. As a result of this decision, the applicable option(s) had to be removed from the Federal EFILE setup and from the Efile-Federal keyword. As you can no longer transmit an xml file which includes both a T5013 return and a T5013 slip, we recommend that you choose the transmission of eligible original slips within the Federal EFILE setup. Once the xml file has been generated and successfully filed, through the CRA’s web site, you can then transmit the T5013 return. To transmit the T5013 return you must enter the keyword Efile-Federal within the applicable file, select the option Yes – T5013 return if eligible, and submit the newly generated xml file. Should you wish to have a copy of both xml files, for record keeping purposes, then please rename your xml file prior to the transmission of the T5013 return. January 14, 2025 |
