Refunds - CRA
You may be entitled to a refund if:
a) Too much tax was withheld at source;
b) You paid more instalments than necessary; or
c) Your refundable credits exceed your total tax payable.
If your total payable (line 43500) on your return is less than
your total credits (line 48200), the difference shown on line 48400
is your refund.
NOTE: As a rule, if the difference is $2 or less, you will not
receive a refund.
The CRA usually takes four to six weeks to process paper
returns, whereas returns filed electronically are usually processed
within two weeks.
If you filed your return on or before April 15th, we advise
that you allow a delay of four weeks before contacting the CRA. If
you filed your return after April 15th, you should allow a
six-week delay before you call.
To verify the status of your refund, you can use one of the
following methods:
1. Go to the CRA's "My Account" page:
https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/account-individuals.html
NOTE: You must register for "My Account" to get
access to your tax information.
2. Call TIPS (Tax Information Phone
Service) at 1-800-267-6999.
If you call before May 1 2022, you will need the total
income amount you entered on line 15000 of
your 2020 return. If you call on or after May 1,
2022, you will need the total income amount you entered on
line 15000 of your 2021
return.
NOTE: If you have moved recently, notify the CRA of your new
address as soon as possible. For more information, click the
