Claiming the Quebec student loan credit for spousal
transfer of the non-refundable tax credit
We have corrected the program. It will now be possible for you
to transfer to your spouse the tax credit for student loans when
the program generates a non-refundable tax credit.
To do this, follow this procedure.
1. On your file, under "Tuition, education, student
loans", click on
the plus sign "+" icon
located on the right of the line "Interest paid on your student
loans (line 31900)".
2. In the page entitled "Interest paid on student loans",
enter the interest you paid for the taxation year. Then, at the
bottom of the page, go to the line "Limit to the amount of
student loan interest claimed" and in the first field enter
$0.00, because this field is for the federal.
3. Click on "Maple Leaf" icon. A second field will
open for Quebec where you will enter the student loan amount that
you wish to transfer.
This amount will be entered on the Quebec Schedule
M.
In addition, this credit will be entered on line 385 of the
Quebec tax return.
This credit will increase your "Non-refundable Tax
Credits", and if these credits are higher than your taxable
income tax, it will be carried over to line 431 for "Credits
transferred from one spouse to the other".
