Canadian resident - Spouse immigrates to
Canada
How do I complete my tax return when my spouse immigrates to
Canada?
You must prepare your personal file as you would normally do,
except for small special entries.
1. On the "Left-side menu on the Interview
tab", select the "Spouse interview type"
section.
2. On the page entitled "Type of information you wish to
provide regarding your spouse", choose "Complete
information (recommended)".
3. Under the heading "Interview setup", check
the box "Immigrant, emigrant, non-resident taxpayer, you
are a Canadian resident and your spouse immigrated to Canada during
the year".
4. Click on the heading "Immigrant, emigrant,
non-resident" in the screen on the right, click on
the plus sign "+"
icon located on the right of the line "You are a resident
of Canada and your spouse has immigrated to Canada in
2019 ".
5. On the page that appears, go to the line "Your net
income while living in Canada with your spouse".
6. Subsequently, enter the information for your return.
7. You must create your spouse's file. Click on "Add a
spouse" located to the right of your name in the
"Interview" tab.
8. Identify your spouse and answer other questions. Under the
heading "Interview Setup" check the box
"Immigrant, emigrant, non-resident taxpayer, you are a
Canadian resident and your spouse immigrated to Canada during the
year".
9. Click on the heading "Immigrant, emigrant,
non-resident" and in the screen, that appears, click on
the plus sign "+" icon
located on the right of the line "You immigrated to Canada
in 2019 ".
10. On the page that appears, answer all the relevant
questions.
11. If you have earned income in Canada, please enter it.
Your federal non-refundable credit will be entered on
line 30000 of Step 5 and for Quebec residents on line
350 of the Quebec return.
If you have a valid SIN, you can file your federal tax return
via NETFILE. However, for residents of Quebec, you must
mail your Quebec return.
