Ontario - ON-BEN - Involuntary separation
If you and your spouse or common-law partner occupied separate
principal residences for medical reasons on December 31 of the tax
year, two choices are available to you.
One of you can claim the Ontario Trillium benefit
payments for the couple, or each spouse may claim such payments
individually if eligible.
If you choose to claim those payments individually,
then follow these steps:
At the head of the household's file, in the "Left
menu on the Interview tab", select "Ontario tax
credits":
1- On the right page, choose the "ON-BEN
Application" group.
2- In this group, choose the option «ON-BEN -
Application for the 2020 Ontario Trillium Benefit (Ontario
sales tax credits, Ontario energy and property tax credit, Northern
Ontario energy credit) and the Ontario Senior Homeowners Property
Tax Grant".
3- On this page, choose the section "Involuntary
separation," answer the question, "Do you want to apply
individually?" And choose your answer in the field on the
right;
4- On the page that appears entitled "Ontario
Trillium Benefit (OIB)", you must answer the questions on this
page;
Complete the spouse's file as follows:
1- In the "Identification" section, for the
line "Do you have the same address as your spouse?" enter
"No".
2- Return to the "Left side menu on the Interview
tab" and select "Current address" and enter the relevant
information on the page displayed.
3- Select "Ontario tax credits" and on the page
to your right, choose the "ON-BEN Application" group.
4- In this group, choose the option "ON-BEN -
Application for the 2020 Ontario Trillium Benefit (Ontario
sales tax credit, Ontario energy and property tax credit, Northern
Ontario energy credit) and the Ontario Senior Homeowners' Property
Tax Grant".
5- On this page, choose the section "Involuntary
separation," answer the question, "Do you want to apply
individually?" And choose your answer in the field to the
right.
In each file, Form ON-BEN will be generated by the
program and "Part C - Involuntary separation" will be
completed automatically.
