Independent Living Tax Credit for Seniors - Line
462 - Quebec
You may be entitled to a refundable tax credit for expenses
incurred by an elder to continue living independently, if you
meet the following two conditions:
- You were resident in Quebec on December 31 of the taxation
year, and
- You are 70 or older on December 31 of the taxation year.
This tax credit is equal to 20 % of the total of the following
expenses:
- The portion of the total expenses for the purchase, lease, and
installation of eligible or fixtures that exceeds $
250.
Effective January 1, 2018, amount reduced to $ 250
previously $ 500.
- Expenses incurred for one or more stays in a functional
rehabilitation transition unit.

To record your expenses in the tax year, please follow the steps
below:
1- On the "Left side menu of the Interview
tab", on the left-hand side of the screen, select
"Medical, disability, caregiver".
2- On the right-side page, go to the group 'Disability
deductions, caregiver? and on the screen to your right, choose
the line "Schedule B - Independent living tax credit for
seniors".
3- a. On the page that is generated, in the first section, enter
the date and description of purchase or lease of equipment, or
installation of eligible property, and enter the amount on the
right.
b. Answer the question "Is this expense an
allowable federal medical expense? (Yes/No)" by choosing
either "Yes" or "No" from the
drop-down list on the right. (1)
c. Answer the question "Is this
expense an allowable Quebec medical expense? (Yes/No)" by
choosing either "Yes" or "No"
from the drop-down list on the right. (2)
4- You can add other articles by clicking on
the plus sign "+
Add another" on the line at the bottom of the section.
5- a. In the second section, enter the date of stay in a
functional rehabilitation transition unit and enter the amount on
the right.
b. Answer the question "Is this
expense an allowable federal medical expense? (Yes/No)",
by choosing either "Yes" or "No"
from the drop-down list on the right. (1)
NOTES:
(1) If you answered "Yes" to the question,
"Is this expense an allowable federal medical
expense?", the program will automatically report the
expense in the federal medical expense section of the tax return.
You do not need to enter it again under "Medical,
disability, caregiver" on the "Interview"
tab.
(2) If you answered "Yes" to the question,
"Is this expense an allowable Quebec medical
expense?", the program will automatically report the
expense in the Quebec medical expense section of the tax return.
You do not need to enter it again under "Medical,
disability, caregiver" on the "Interview"
tab.
However, these costs will not
be eligible for the refundable tax credit to maintain its
autonomy.
For these expenses to be eligible for the refundable credit,
you must answer NO to the section ''Are these expenses
eligible as medical expenses in Quebec''.
The program will carry these costs over to section E of Quebec
Schedule B and the refundable tax credit will be carried over by
the program to line 462 of the Quebec tax returns, with
code 24 displayed on line 461.
