Change in marital status
The marital status is determined by the answer to the question
"Did your marital status change in 2019'' in the
''Identification'' section of the program.
In order to indicate a change in marital status, please follow
these steps:
1. Under the "Left side menu to the Interview tab", select
the item "Identification".
2. On the page that appears to the right, answer "Change" to
the question "Did your marital status change in 2019?" and
click "Next" at the bottom of the page.
3. Return to the ''Left side menu to the Interview tab'' and
select the item ''Marital status change'' and in the page
that appears, in the line ''Change in your marital status
changed in 2019'' in the dropdown menu to your right choose the
option that suit you, and subsequently fill the page.
4. If you were separated in the tax year you must complete the
page
"Information about your ex-spouse" under the "Ex-spouse"
option of the "Left side menu on the Interview tab".
Questions with a red asterisk are mandatory.
However, if you wish to claim an amount on line 30300
"Spouse or common-law partner amount" of the Federal
return, you must enter the net income on line 23600 of
the federal return of your ex- spouse's. If you do not
want to claim this credit, then enter an amount greater than the
base amount for the period you were together.
5. However, if you have a new partner, answer the question on the
page "Type of information you wish to provide about your
spouse''.
We recommend that you choose "Complete Information" The
program optimizes the tax return for you and your spouse together.
By treating the family as a unit, the program can:
* optimize transfers between spouses to minimize the total tax
payable for the family;
* ensure that tax credits based on the family are claimed to the
extent possible;
* prevent common errors and omissions such as duplicate claims,
unfair transfers and incomplete information about your
spouse.
6. However, if you want to prepare your two returns separately,
select "Net income only" A new page entitled "Spouse -
Basic information" is added to the "Left side menu to the
Interview tab" where you can enter basic information only. Some
transfers will not be possible, because the program will not have
all the required information.
NOTE:
You got your divorce in the taxation year. However, you were
already separated, and the government had been informed in previous
years. To perform an update of your application to the government,
please do the following:
1. In the "Left side menu on the Interview tab", on the left
side of the screen under "Identification", on the line
"Marital Status on December 31, 2019", enter
"Divorced" in the drop-down menu to the right.
2. To the question "Did your marital status change in
2019?", answer "No change" from the drop-down
menu.
By performing this procedure, the "Marital status change"
will not be generated by the program.
