Ontario - Ontario Trillium Benefit
The Ontario Trillium Benefit data entry was
slightly changed in 2019. We suggest you pay attention to the
changes.
The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) includes the
following credits.
* The Ontario sales tax credit;
* The Ontario energy and property tax credit;
* Credit for energy costs in Northern Ontario.
You are not claiming the "Ontario Sales Tax Credit". The
CRA will determine from the information provided in your return
whether you are eligible and will notify you.
Payments from these credits are combined to better match the
expenses incurred by taxpayers. You must apply and be
eligible for at least one of these credits to receive
the OTB.
If you have a spouse and the latter usually lives with
you, only one of you can apply for the OTB for
your couple.
You can choose to wait until June 2021 to receive your OTP from
2020 in one payment instead of receiving it from July 2020 to June
2021. Please indicate this in the "Choice for delayed single OTB
payment" section.
To apply for OTB using the program, please
follow these steps:
1. On the "Left-side menu on the Interview tab" of your
tax file, select the "Ontario tax credits" section.
2. On the page to the right, choose the "ON-BEN
Application" group.
3. In this group, choose the option "ON-BEN - Application for
the 2020 of the Ontario Trillium benefit (Ontario sales tax, energy
costs and property taxes, costs of energy in northern ON.) and
subv. to the pers. elderly prop. for property tax".
4. On the page that appears entitled "Ontario Trillium
Benefit (OTB)", you must answer the questions on this page;
If you are requesting a credit, a section titled "Declaration
of information about the principal residence" will appear with
the words "Click here". Perform this operation, you return
to the "Ontario tax credits" section, choose the "ON-BEN
Declaration (s)" group, select one or the options that
corresponds to your situation. Enter your information.
On the "Declaration for student in a designated
residence" option, you must enter the name of the
residence.
If you lived in a private, non-profit long-term care home or a
public long-term care home, you must choose the "Declaration for
amount paid for public or non-profit long-term care home"
option. Please note that if the establishment has
not detailed the cost of the room and board, you can claim up to
75% of the total amount as accommodation cost.
The program generates an estimate of the Ontario Trillium
benefit for July 2020 to June 2021.
