Quebec prescription drug insurance plan - Turning
65 years old
Even if you have a private insurance plan, as soon as you reach
the age of 65, being a Quebec resident, you are automatically
registered to the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan of the
Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
However, if you are eligible for a private plan offering basic
coverage, you should check with your private insurer to see whether
the plan is primary or supplemental.
1. If your plan is primary, you can keep it.
2. If your plan is supplemental to the public plan, you remain
enrolled in the RAMQ.
Persons who choose to retain the basic coverage of their private
plan must contact the Régie to cancel their registration to the
public plan. Otherwise, they would be covered by two basic plans,
which is prohibited under the Act respecting prescription drug
insurance. Before cancelling their public plan
registration, they must make sure their private plan indeed offers
basic coverage at least equal to that provided by the
Régie.

However, if you choose to be insured by the RAMQ after your 65th
birthday, you must report it as follows:
1. On the "Left side menu of the Interview tab",
select the "Quebec drug insurance plan" section. On the
screen to the right, in the drop-down menu, choose the option "5
- Exceptions, Quebec insurance plan, part of the year".
2. At the bottom of the page will open, and for the line
"Specify the exception(s) that applied to you",
choose the option "Own group insurance plan (code
14)" from the drop-down menu and select the months for
which you were covered during the tax year.
Schedule K will be generated by the program indicating the month(s)
in which you were covered by your private drug insurance plan. The
premium payable to the RAMQ will be reported by the program to line
447 of the Quebec return.
However, in subsequent years, on the "Left side menu of
the Interview tab" select "Quebec drug insurance
plan" and in the drop-down menu choose the option
"3 - Quebec insurance plan, all year".
